When the + POOL Opens in Two Years, It Will Use Filtered Water From New York City's East River
Feeling a little envious of those preparing to quite literally make a splash at the luxe floating pool at London's Embassy Garden? Thankfully, a floating pool of another sort is slated to open in (yes, IN!) New York City's East River within two years. The pool, which is dubbed + POOL due in part to its shape, has officially received a “confirmation to proceed with due diligence” from the City of New York and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC).
If the unique plus sign shape of the floating pool already has you intrigued, the + POOL boasts yet another truly unique feature. According to the + POOL website, the pool is "designed to filter the very river that it floats in through the walls of the pool."
"+ POOL strives to reclaim the river as a recreational resource for the city, while educating the public about issues affecting our water quality," the + POOL website reads.
According to Architectural Digest, the idea for the floating pool was originally conceived by Archie Lee Coates IV and Jeff Franklin of the design firm PlayLab, and Dong-Ping Wong and Oana Stanescu of the architecture firm Family, well over a decade ago. In the years since the idea was conceived, the team has worked to raise funds, develop filtration systems, test the filtration systems and more.
If construction for + POOL goes smoothly and the appropriate funds are raised, New Yorkers can expect to dive in within about two years.
