'The Politician' Star Dylan McDermott Celebrates 35 Years of Sobriety

Dylan McDermott says remaining sober for the past 35 years has been his "greatest accomplishment."

The actor, whose highly-anticipated new series "The Politician" drops next month, shared a reflective post revealing how grateful he is that he was able to turn his life around.

"Today is my Sober Birthday. 35 years! Staying sober has been my greatest accomplishment," he wrote on Monday. "I say that because I was able to show up for myself in every way possible. In the most turbulent and best of times I had the rock of the 12 steps to guide me."

Continuing his post, McDermott states that being sober has helped him be "able to be a father, son, brother and friend."

Reiterating how monumental the celebration is because his dad and birth mother struggled with addiction, the 57-year-old adds that watching them suffer "was brutal to witness."

McDermott credits most of his success to Alcoholics Anonymous, his sponsor and his adoptive mother, playwright Eve Ensler.

"I’ve also seen many who didn’t make it and that truly breaks my heart. If you’re hurting please get help. The loving hand of #alcoholicsanonymous is always available!" he wrote. "Without the guidance of my sponsor and @eveensler I would not be here today. I will be forever grateful to them!"

Ending his celebration tribute, the "American Horror Story" actor made it clear he's not dwelling on his past struggles.

"I look forward to many more years of sobriety, trudging the road of happy destiny," he wrote.

Fans will be able to watch McDermott on Netflix alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Lange and Ben Platt when "The Politician" debuts on September 27.
