Police suspect street gang fired on house in Athens that was hit with more than 50 bullets

Athens-Clarke police are attempting to identify a street gang that detectives believe recently peppered a house in Athens with bullets.

The house on the 1500 block of East Broad Street sits in a residential neighborhood and was fired upon sometime around 3 a.m. on July 4, according to the police report. None of the occupants were injured.

Police responding to the scene found 51 bullets of various makes, including 9mm, .380-caliber and rounds described as 300 Blackout bullets.

Police said Wednesday that evidence "leads detectives to believe this incident is gang-related."

"The firing of this many rounds in a neighborhood is very dangerous," the statement said.

The house is a residence for a couple. The 55-year-old wife told police she heard what she thought were fireworks going off near her home about 3 a.m., but she didn't find the bullet damage until later that morning when police arrived to investigate reports of gunfire from other residents.

Police found bullets in windows, doors and places inside the home where bullets pierced the couch, fireplace and interior walls. There were numerous bullet marks along the front porch, according to the report.

The woman told officers she was unaware of who might do this or why. Police advised her to call if she finds any other bullets that were not found and collected.
