Police in Massachusetts are currently searching for a 40-year-old man suspected of killing a 31-year-old woman before boarding a flight out of the U.S.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police said in a press release on Thursday that they have obtained an arrest warrant for Kevin Kangethe, 40, after finding the body of missing Whitman woman, Margaret Mbitu, in a garage at Logan Airport.

At about 6:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday, Massachusetts State Troopers who were assigned to the Logan Airport Barracks found a woman deceased in a car located in the Central Parking garage at the airport. They then identified the woman as Mbitu, who had been reported missing on Monday and was the “subject of a missing person’s investigation,” according to authorities.

Detectives determined that evidence at the scene “indicates” that she had been “the victim of a homicide,” per the press release.

Following the discovery, police said that their investigation identified a suspect, Kangethe, who is from Lowell Ma. They determined that he and Mbitu knew each other and that the homicide “was not a random act.”

Authorities also determined that he had boarded a flight bound for Kenya after her death, though authorities didn’t clarify if the plane was boarded at Logan Airport or the date when he departed in the press release.

The arrest warrant obtained by Boston’s WCVB-TV claimed that Kangethe and Mbitu had been dating and noted that Mbitu was found with large slash wounds to her face and neck and a puncture wound on her side.

"They observed a large amount of blood inside the vehicle," the warrant stated, per the outlet.

The document also alleged, per WCVB-TV, that Kangethe was seen driving into the Logan Airport parking garage on a surveillance video and then entering the terminal area of the airport to check into a flight headed to Kenya on Tuesday.

State Police Detectives said they obtained a warrant charging Kangethe with Mbitu’s murder and are “working with Kenyan authorities to locate” him.

“There is no threat to the public or to Logan Airport travelers,” The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police said. “No further information is being released at this time to protect the integrity of the investigation.”

Mbitu’s cousin George Kamu remembered her to NBC Boston as a “beautiful” soul. "We have lost a beautiful girl that we all loved — quite a treasure to us. Quite a happy person, in and outside," Kamu said.

He added to WCVB-TV,  "We want justice for Maggie, and we will not rest until that is done."

Authorities added that Mbitu’s family have requested privacy at this time.
