Poetess and Stranger seeks to create a poetry community in Petoskey

PETOSKEY — After a successful four-week poetry intensive workshop in April, Sarah Snider of Poetess and Stranger in downtown Petoskey is expanding her offerings to reach even more people.

“I truly believe that isolation and loneliness will tear a community apart as easily as anything else,” said Snider, who is a published poet herself. “Strong communities are built by finding ways to honor what moves us and share it. Poetry is what moves me, and so I am honoring it by creating a community space where those who are also moved to be vulnerable and open through poetry can do so with me. This is poetic togetherness, join us.”

Another poetry intensive workshop, “Mapping the Field,” will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 29 in the Carnegie Building. Presented by Pushcart Prize winning poet David Hornibrook, this day-long, generative workshop will think about poetry as a multi-dimensional map making process. What people call writer's block is really just an open field — open but not empty. The group will practice “mapping the field” and discovering the rich variety of sources available to anyone interested in creating poems.
