Plans this weekend? Get new ink inspired by Rembrandt at the Worcester Art Museum

WORCESTER - People have been called “a work of art” before, but visitors to the Worcester Art Museum will be able to become literal walking art pieces come Saturday.

Crown of Thorns Tattoo Shop will be hosting a pop-up event at the museum where patrons can receive tattoos based on works by Rembrandt and other artwork on display.

“Our partnership with Crown of Thorns Tattoo is just one example of the endless ways in which we can all connect with art," said Marnie Weir, director of learning and engagement at the museum. "The techniques seen in Rembrandt’s etchings serve as a point of inspiration for these tattoo artists and we are excited to see our visitors incorporate this iconic art on their bodies.”

Visitors will choose their designs from a flash sheet, featuring line drawings from tattoo artists Eamon Gillen and Seth Campbell.

The collaboration began last fall with Gillen providing the museum with designs for temporary tattoos, but his connection to the Worcester Art Museum goes back much further. “I’ve been taking classes there since I was a teenager,” said Gillen, who is a Worcester native. He's also known for the mural at the Hotel Vernon.

Not all museum art translates to body art. "Skin is not always the most forgiving canvas over the years," said Gillen. An image has to be chosen not only for aesthetics but for longevity and readability as the skin ages.

Of the options on the flash sheet, Gillen said one of his favorites was the ancient Greek helmet. "I wanted to add something from the Higgins Armory Collection," he said. "That was always a place my mom would bring me a lot."

The event will take place in the Higgins Education Wing, Studio 206 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Prices will be between $100 and $400 depending on tattoos chosen. Registration is required.
