‘Planet of the Apes’ characters spotted on horseback at Crissy Field: photos

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Figures that looked as if they had stepped right out of a “Planet of the Apes” movie were spotted on horseback at Crissy Field in San Francisco Wednesday. Photos obtained by KRON4 News showed what appeared to be actors in stoic-faced ape costumes.

Video and photos sent by a viewer showed three of the ape-costumed figures mounted on black horses as curious bystanders gathered nearby.

So why were they in San Francisco Wednesday?

According to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle, the unexpected spectacle is part of the marketing campaign to promote the upcoming installment of the “Planet of the Apes” series, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.”

The film, which is the fourth installment in the rebooted iconic sci-fi saga, is due out on May 10. Ape actors on horseback were also seen on Venice Beach in Southern California this week to promote the film, according to the Chronicle.

KRON4 News has reached out to the San Francisco Film Commission for independent confirmation on why the apes were seen on horseback. We have not yet heard back.
