Sources: P.J. Fleck, Minnesota agree to contract extension
P.J. Fleck and the University of Minnesota have agreed to a contract extension, sources told Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel.
The extension, which includes a significant pay raise for he and his staff, adds three years to his current deal, meaning Fleck now has seven years remaining on his contract through the 2026 season.

Fleck, in his third season at Minnesota, originally signed a five-year, $18 million contract when hired away from Western Michigan in 2016. Fleck, 38, was previously given one-year extensions by Minnesota in both 2017 and 2018. Fleck currently makes $3.6 million per year, according to USA Today. That ranks 11th among the 14 head coaches in the Big Ten.
Fleck has the Gophers, ranked No. 13 in the Associated Press Top 25, off to an 8-0 start heading into Saturday’s matchup with No. 5 Penn State. Minnesota last started 8-0 in 1941.
Fleck’s name has been floated in connection to other jobs, including the now-open Florida State position and USC, which is expected to move on from Clay Helton in the coming weeks.
Fleck has a 20-13 record at Minnesota. The Gophers went 5-7 in his first season and 7-6 in 2018, including a win over Georgia Tech in the Quick Lane Bowl.
Fleck, known for his enthusiasm and “row the boat” mantra, led Western Michigan to an undefeated regular season and MAC title in 2016. The Broncos then represented the Group of Five conferences in a New Year’s Six bowl game, but lost 24-16 to Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl.
