Pixies and Modest Mouse recently kicked off a co-headlining North American tour, and played the second show of a two-night stand at New York City’s Rooftop at Pier 17 on Tuesday evening (August 22nd).

The outdoor venue at the South Street Seaport provides a stunning backdrop in the form of the actual New York City skyline. As fans watch the bands, to the left is the Empire State Building and to the right is the Brooklyn Bridge.

On a beautiful night with a nice breeze coming off the East River, Pixies had the honor of closing out the festivities, kicking things off with the surf-heavy “Cecilia Ann,” and wasting no time time getting to favorites like “Bone Machine,” “Monkey Gone to Heaven,” “Caribou,” and “Debaser.” Singer Black Francis sounded in fine form, with his screams bouncing off the Manhattan skyscrapers.

The set continued with more classics like  “Wave of Mutilation,” “Gouge Away,” “Hey,” and “Here Comes Your Man,” before closing with “Where Is My Mind?” and a cover of Neil Young’s “Winterlong.” The 25-song setlist was a testament to the power of Pixies’ initial discography (prior to their 1993 breakup and subsequent 2004 reunion). From 1988 through 1991, the band put out four incredible albums, including the masterful Doolittle, which was well represented with seven songs.

While the sky was dark for Pixies’ set, it was still light outside when Modest Mouse took the stage at 7 p.m. sharp. Frontman Isaac Brock and company kicked things off with “Cowboy Dan” off 1997’s The Lonesome Crowded West, and proceeded to play a career-spanning set that included three songs from the band’s latest full-length, 2021’s The Golden Casket.

As the sun began to set, the show picked up steam, leading to the penultimate song, the ubiquitous “Float On,” with the crowd singing along to every word. Modest Mouse closed out their performance with an impassioned rendition of “Spitting Venom” against what was now a nighttime panorama of the Big Apple.

Prior to Modest Mouse, the evening opened with a half-hour set from Cat Power, who delivered an eight-song performance bookended by covers of The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man.”
