Adam Sandler Fights '80s Video Games in First 'Pixels' Trailer

Sony’s upcoming blockbuster Pixels looks to be a total mind-bender — and not just because it features Kevin James as the President of the United States.

The first trailer for Adam Sandler’s new video game-themed flick has arrived, looking to ride the never-ending wave of ‘80s nostalgia. Directed by Home Alone and Harry Potter director Chris Columbus, the film stars Sandler as a former arcade champion who is called upon by the president to help save the city from alien-enhanced, real-life versions of classic video game characters that have invaded earth.

Basically, it looks like Grown Ups-meets-Ghostbusters, by way of Minecraft.

The backstory: In 1982, the United States sent a time capsule stocked with examples of the era’s culture into space, in hopes that it might find a friendly extra-terrestrial and pique its interest (this didn’t actually happen in the real world). Unfortunately, it seems that the rocket-launched care package insulted some mysterious alien creatures, and so they turned our primitive 8-bit characters into giant death machines.

Given his former arcade glory, Sandler’s character is clearly the only one who can defeat these space invaders. But he’ll need the help of his old gaming nemeses (played by Josh Gad and Peter Dinklage). It’s a rough blow to his ego, but at least he gets to work with a genius weapons engineer played by Michelle Monaghan.

Pixels hits theaters on July 24, but if you are really super-eager to get into this nightmarish world, check out the game app/marketing device Dojo Quest, an advertisement for which was sneaked into the trailer.
