Pixel Studios Launched for Singapore Digital Content Industry

Yaacob Ibrahim, Singapore’s minister of Communications & Information, was on hand Tuesday to give a formal opening to Pixel Studios, a new location especially for the country’s digital content creators.

Housed in a renovated building within the Mediapolis district, which also houses Fusionopolis and the Sandcrawler Building, Pixel Studios has the facilities to be a shooting stage and a destination for digital creators to network. Replacing a smaller-scale previous initiative called the Games Solution Centre, the new venue has green screen and video post-production facilities and office space for the incubation of 24 small companies.

While the focus is largely on ventures producing games and short-form video content, there is also significant space for virtual reality start-ups.

“It is a space for content creation… VR, AR, workshops, data analytics and games know-how,” said Ibrahim. He added that the motto of the place should be “create, collaborate, innovate.”

The project is backed by the new InfoComm Media Development Authority and managed by Nanyang Polytechnic, with Disney’s Maker Studios a leading partner. The IMDA and Maker will Thursday launch the first edition of new Spark By Maker program. Other partners include StarHub, Go Game and Sony.

Pixel was Tuesday also the venue for the first edition of SMF Ignite, a digital and gaming conference held on the sidelines of the Singapore Media Festival. The SMF also stretches to include the Asian television Forum, which starts next week< and the already under way Singapore International Film Festival.
