Pitt QB Max Browne out for season after shoulder surgery
Max Browne’s season with Pitt is over before the midway point of October.
Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said Thursday that the USC transfer would miss the rest of the season after shoulder surgery. Browne suffered a shoulder injury in Pitt’s loss to Syracuse on Saturday and was replaced by Ben DiNucci.
The injury to Browne’s throwing shoulder set up an awkward situation at the end of the 27-24 loss to the Orange. After DiNucci’s helmet came off on the penultimate play of the game, the team took its redshirt off freshman quarterback Kenny Pickett for the final play.
Pickett, sans redshirt, will now serve as DiNucci’s backup. Monday, Narduzzi said the redshirt sophomore would be the starter with Browne out.
Browne transferred to Pitt as a grad transfer before the 2017 season from USC. He opened the 2016 season as the Trojans starter and was displaced by Sam Darnold after USC started 1-2.
Browne is 96-135 passing for 997 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions this season. DiNucci is 36-65 passing for 442 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Pitt plays No. 20 NC State on Saturday.
