The Pitchfork Guide to Upcoming Releases: Fall 2017

From the National and St. Vincent to Morrissey and Taylor Swift, here’s a big list of records to look forward to in the coming months

Welcome back to the Pitchfork Guide to Upcoming Releases, our seasonal guide to new music. Four times a year, we round up a list of albums, singles, EPs, reissues, and more arriving in the coming months. This installment covers fall 2017, starting today and taking us to the end of the eyar. (Please note that release dates may change.) To start things off, we’ve highlighted a few particularly notable releases, including albums by the National, Alvvays, Zola Jesus, Gucci Mane, Moses Sumney, Kamasi Washington, Morrissey, King Krule, Destroyer, St. Vincent, and more.

The National: Sleep Well Beast (September 8, 4AD)

It’s been four years since the National released their last full-length album, and they return this year with Sleep Well Beast. “We recorded so much music: focusing in on what the album is, that gets more intense in the old way. But this time, we weren't so interested in constructing a polished or elaborately tightly-knit kind of record,” Aaron Dessner told Pitchfork in May. “We allowed ourselves to have more sounds that are just hanging out there in the mist.” Although the album comes out on September 8, the band will perform it live in its entirety on September 5.

Alvvays: Antisocialites (September 8, Polyvinyl/Transgressive)

Antisocialites is the second album from Canadian indie-pop band Alvaays, following their 2014 self-titled debut. “This record is a fantasy breakup arc and my life nearly imitated art,” frontwoman Molly Rankin said of the record. Antisocialites features “In Undertow” and “Dreams Tonite.”

Mount Kimbie: Love What Survives (September 8, Warp)

Love What Survives follows Mount Kimbie’s 2013 album Cold Spring Fault Less Youth. The record features King Krule (“Blue Train Line”), James Blake (“We Go Home Together”), Micachu (“Marilyn”), and others.

Zola Jesus: Okovi (September 8, Sacred Bones)

Zola Jesus returns to Sacred Bones with her new release, Okovi. She released her last album, 2014’s Taiga, on Mute. Check out track reviews of “Exhumed,” “Soak,” and “Siphon,” and read Pitchfork’s new interview “Zola Jesus Turns Tragedy into a Torrential Sound on Her New Album.”

Hundred Waters: Communicating (September 14, OWSLA)

Hundred Waters’ new LP, Communicating, follows 2014’s The Moon Rang Like a Bell and a 2015 remix album. The new record includes the previously shared “Particle,” “Blanket Me,” and “Fingers.”

Ariel Pink: Dedicated to Bobby Jameson (September 15, Mexican Summer)

Earlier this year, Ariel Pink teamed up with Weyes Blood to release their collaborative EP Myths 002. Now, he returns with his first solo LP since 2014’s Pom Pom. He’s previewed the album with several singles, including “Another Weekend,“ “Feels Like Heaven,” and “Time to Live.”

Gucci Mane: Mr. Davis (September 15, Guwop Enterprises/Atlantic)

Gucci Mane continues his prolific output with a new album that features Migos, Nicki Minaj, the Weeknd, Big Sean, A$AP Rocky, Schoolboy Q, Monica, Slim Jxmmi, and many others. Mr. Davis follows Droptopwop and his numerous 2016 projects. Revisit Pitchfork’s “Driving Into Gucci Mane’s 2014 Vaults.∏

Hiss Golden Messenger: Hallelujah Anyhow (September 22, Merge)

It hasn’t even been a full year since Hiss Golden Messenger released his last LP, Heart Like a Levee, but singer-songwriter M.C. Taylor returns this year with his latest. He recorded his new project with Megafaun’s Brad Cook, who also contributed bass. “Love is the only way out,” Taylor said in a statement. “I’ve never been afraid of the darkness; it’s just a different kind of light. And if some days that belief comes harder than others, hallelujah anyhow.”

Moses Sumney: Aromanticism (September 22, Jagjaguwar)

Following last year’s Lamentations EP, Moses Sumney’s debut full-length is on the way. So far, he’s shared two tracks from Aromanticism: “Doomed” and “Quarrel.” For the former, he also released a haunting music video showing him submerged in a body of water. Revisit Pitchfork’s 2015 interview with Sumney.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor: “Luciferian Towers” (September 29, Constellation)

Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s latest album features only four tracks, and thus far, they’ve shared the first one: “Undoing a Luciferian Towers.” “We aimed for wrong notes that explode, a quiet muttering amplified heavenward,” the band said in a statement, adding, “We recorded it all in a burning motorboat.”

Kamasi Washington: Harmony of Difference (September 29, Young Turks)

Kamasi Washington’s six-song suite, debuted at the Whitney Biennial, comprises his new Harmony of Difference EP. It follows his massive 2015 album The Epic.

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith: The Kid (October 6, Western Vinyl)

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith released two albums last year: her solo LP EARS and the collaborative Sunergy with Suzanne Ciani. Her new album, The Kid, features “An Intention” and “To Follow and Lead.”b

Kelela: Take Me Apart (October 6, Warp)

Kelela’s debut studio album follows her 2015 EP Hallucinogen. She recently shared a music video for her album’s first single “LMK.” In it, she dons several different personas. Read Pitchfork’s feature “Kelela’s Philosophy of Love.”

Wolf Parade: Cry Cry Cry (October 6, Sub Pop/Universal)

Canadian indie band Wolf Parade are releasing their first full-length album since going on hiatus seven years ago. Cry Cry Cry follows their 2010 LP Expo 86. Last year, they released EP 4—their first new music after reuniting. The band have premiered their first two singles “Valley Boy” and “You’re Dreaming.”

Beck: Colors (October 13, Fonograf/Capitol)

Beck’s last album, 2014’s Morning Phase, won Album of the Year at the Grammys. His next one includes “Up All Night,” “Dear Life,” “Wow,” and “Dreams.”

Kurt Vile / Courtney Barnett: Lotta Sea Lice (October 13, Matador/Marathon Artists)

Following Kurt Vile’s and Courtney Barnett’s acclaimed 2015 albums (b’lieve i’m goin down and Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, respectively), they’ve joined forces for a new collaborative LP. It features the lead single “Over Everything.”

Destroyer: ken (October 20, Merge)

Two years after Poison Season, Dan Bejar returns with a new Destroyer album. ken was produced by Black Mountain’s Josh Wells, who’s drummed for Destroyer since 2012. The album features the lead single “Sky’s Grey.”

Morrissey: Low in High School (November, BMG/Etienne)

It’s been since three years since Morrissey’s last album, World Peace Is None of Your Business, and he returns in November with Low in High School. Few details, including a concrete release date, are known about his next record. The LP was recorded in France’s La Fabrique Studios and Ennio Morricone’s Forum Studios in Rome with producer Joe Chiccarelli. Morrissey will play a one-off show at the Hollywood Bowl on November 10 (which is presumably why his name appeared over an L.A. freeway).

Converge: The Dusk In Us (November 3, Epitaph/Deathwish)

Converge’s follow-up to 2012’s All We Love We Leave Behind is out in November. Vocalist Jacob Bannon said their new music was his “emotional reaction to the complex world in which we live.” So far, the band have shared two singles: “I Can Tell You About Pain”” and “Under Duress.”

Taylor Swift: Reputation (November 10, Big Machine)

Taylor Swift’s 1989 follow-up arrives in November. It features her lead single “Look What You Made Me Do,” which got an accompanying music video that premiered during the VMAs. The clip, which appears to be a commentary in part about Swift’s previous music video personas, broke the YouTube record for the most views in a single day.

Björk: TBA (TBA)

Björk hasn’t officially announced her new album beyond the promise that it’s coming “very soon,” though she has described it as her “Tinder record.” Whenever it arrives, the new album will follow 2015’s Vulnicura. Earlier this year, she announced a career-spanning songbook called 34 Scores.

King Krule: TBA (TBA)

After sparking speculation about a new album with a series of mysterious posters, King Krule shared a new song last month called “Czech One.” The track will be available for purchase on a 7" (backed by another new track, “Dum Surfer”) on September 13 via True Panther/XL. Archy Marshall’s last album as King Krule, 6 Feet Beneath the Moon, came out in 2013.

St. Vincent: TBA (TBA)

St. Vincent said that the follow-up to her 2014 self-titled LP is “all about sex and drugs and sadness.” The details are currently unknown, but it’s likely to include her new song “New York” (which recently got an accompanying video). Annie Clark debuted another new song called “LA” at a recent performance, and in an interview, she revealed that the album includes songs called “Hang on Me,” “Smoking Section,” “Sugarboy,” and “Pills.”
