Detroit Piston Isaiah Stewart was arrested for assault after punching Drew Eubanks in the face before their game.

According to the NBA, Eubanks and Stewart were caught in an argument hours before the Pistons took on the Phoenix Suns. Drew told the league that the argument found both men pressing each other “chest-to-chest.”

The Pistons player punched Drew in the face before security intervened. Law enforcement arrived on the scene and found that Eubanks suffered from a minor injury. Phoenix authorities state that Stewart was released and issued a citation. It’s currently unclear what started the argument and attack.

The Phoenix Suns issued a statement regarding the incident and called Stewart’s attack “unprovoked.” “The attack on Drew Eubanks was unprovoked, and acts of violence such as this are unacceptable,” the Suns statement read. “We unequivocally support Drew, and will continue to work with local law enforcement and the NBA.”

Detroit also shared a statement with the NBA, detailing they were aware of the altercation. “We are in the process of gathering information about what happened and what provoked it, and responding to the NBA and local authorities,” they typed.

Pistons head coach Monty Williams also weighed in on the incident. Williams opined that the Suns should have waited until the NBA received “all of the information” before giving a statement. Monty was fired by the Phoenix Suns after last season.

“The thing is to get all of the information. The NBA will do an investigation,” Williams said. “For me to come here and make a statement would be a bit irresponsible. I know the Suns said it was unprovoked; I think that is irresponsible for sure. You really don’t know…That did not need to happen. There is a time for the information to be gathered, and then you can make a statement.”

Drew Eubanks went on to play in the exhibition between the Pistons and the Suns. The center scored six points and had eight rebounds while playing 18 minutes. Phoenix beat Detroit 116-100.
