A pilot died after a fiery plane crash in the parking lot of a Texas shopping mall

A pilot has died after a plane crashed into the parking lot of a shopping mall in Texas on Tuesday, police said.

The Plano Police Department revealed that the pilot lost his life after the small plane crashed in Plano on Tuesday at around 6:00 p.m. local time.

“On Nov 21st, 2023, at appx 6:00 p.m., a small plane crashed near the intersection of W Park Blvd & Midway Rd. The pilot unfortunately lost their life in the tragic accident,” Plano Police wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). “FAA and NTSB are investigating. During this difficult time, we extend condolences to the family and friends.”

According to NBC News, no one else received injuries, and no other buildings were damaged.

The outlet added that Plano Fire-Rescue’s Daniel Daly said in a news conference at the scene on Tuesday that the plane did not “land” or “collide with anything.”

However, Daly added that a fire broke out from the crash, which spread to “an unoccupied parked vehicle,” adding that “the only thing we can say is that the FAA and NTSB are both en route to the scene and they will be handling all the investigation as the cause of the crash.”

Per NBC Dallas-Fort Worth, the Federal Aviation Administration revealed that the small plane was a single-engine Mooney M20. Police also said that the fire broke out outside Mama's Daughters Diner in west Plano.

The outlet added that despite the crash occurring near Air Park-Dallas Airport. It’s unknown whether the plane had taken off from there or was set to land at that airport.

According to CNN, responders fighting flames around the plane were captured on video by witness Corban Garcia, who heard an explosion while leaving work.

“I looked up to the left and saw a huge plume of smoke,” Garcia said, per CNN. “Honestly, at first I thought it was a car fire until I saw the tail of the airplane. Then I was shocked.”
