Pigs and Bunnies Find Their Voice as 'Sing' Belts Out a First Trailer

Kids love talking animals. And everyone (or, at least, much of the global reality-TV audience) enjoys singing competitions comprised of both stellar newcomers and so-bad-they’re-funny clowns. So it seems almost preordained that eventually, moviegoers would be bestowed with Sing — a new animated comedy from the creators of Despicable Me that marries those two elements in a holiday film. Watch the first teaser above.

Directed by Garth Jennings (best known for helming the big-budget The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and the indie Son of Rambow), Sing recounts the efforts of a cuddly koala bear named Buster (voiced by Matthew McConaughey) to keep his sagging theater business alive by hosting a singing contest. As the trailer suggests, the result of that endeavor is various animals doing their best — by which we mean goofiest — renditions of Top 40 hits from decades past, be it Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” or Crazy Town’s awful ‘90s alterna-pop anthem “Butterfly.”

Sing’s bouncy visual style and absurd karaoke comedy should help it appeal to both young and old viewers alike, and with a cast that includes Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon, John C. Reilly, Seth MacFarlane, Leslie Jones and Nick Offerman, it’s got A-list talent to spare. The film doesn’t premiere in theaters until Dec. 21, but you can get a taste of its grooves above.
