Some James Bond fans might be shaken by Pierce Brosnan’s latest comment about the character.
The actor was asked by Details whether he could see the film series opting for a gay Bond, and although Brosnan himself would be open to the idea, he doesn’t imagine it happening anytime soon.
After initially responding with “Sure. Why not?” to the idea of a gay Bond, Brosnan — who last played the spy character four times including in 2002’s Die Another Day — paused before adding: “Actually, I don’t know how it would work. I don’t think [Bond producer] Barbara [Broccoli] would allow a gay Bond to happen in her lifetime. But it would certainly make for interesting viewing.”
“Let’s start with a great black actor being James Bond,” the No Escape star continued. “Idris Elba certainly has the physicality, the charisma, the presence. But I think Daniel [Craig] will be there for a while yet.”
The next Bond film, SPECTRE, stars Craig, Christoph Waltz and Léa Seydoux and hits theaters Nov. 6.
