"Pictures of the Past" opens Thursday evening at Daviess County Museum

Oct. 16—There's that saying, "A picture is worth a thousand words," and if that's really the case, on Thursday a new exhibit at the Daviess County Museum will leave many speechless.

"We will be opening our exhibit on local photography," said museum director Becky Kremp.

Called "Pictures of the Past," Kremp said the exhibit, which encompasses the first and second floors of the museum located on Main Street, features many hand colored photos from the collection of photographer Charles Luder as well as many others. "Those photos are hand colored and were recently donated by Mr. Luder's granddaughter."

Kremp said not only was the museum gifted Luder's work but also many of his tools of the trade including his camera, filing cabinet and desk.

"Larry Harper also had his original cash register he's restored. When you take the bottom drawer out, it says "Made for Charles R. Luder, 1916."

Trying to make history relevant, Kremp said throughout the museum will be side-by-sides of old photos and new photos of how things look today.

"We want people to be able to see what's still the same and how things have changed," she said.

The exhibit will open to the public during the museum's annual gala.

"Each year, we try to do something special. We are really excited to share this one with the community beginning on Thursday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.," said Kremp adding the event is free and open to the public.
