THEN: MR. T With a Mohawk haircut copied out of "National Geographic" and countless gold chains (reportedly worth $300,000 at the time), Laurence Tureaud transformed himself into Mr. T. Spotted by Sylvester Stallone on a TV competition, he was cast as Clubber Lang in "Rocky III." The movie launched both his acting career and his catchphrase: "I pity the fool." At the height of his fame, Mr. T had his own action figures, records, Saturday morning cartoon show, and breakfast cereal (enjoyed by Pee Wee Herman in his "Big Adventure"). After "The A-Team" ended, he never really left the public eye, appearing in commercials and on TV shows, usually as himself. Mr. T was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma in 1995, but after treatment he has been healthy for nearly a decade. He scored the biggest box-office hit of his career last year as a voice in the animated "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs." He turned down the offer to cameo in the new "A-Team" movie. He said he didn't object to the remake, but that it just didn't interest him. There were reports that Mr. T had derided the movie for being "too graphic," but his lawyer stated that he had not seen it and would not comment on it.
