“I’m Not There” – This strange biopic/musical inspired by the life of singer-songwriter Bob Dylan features Ledger in the role of an actor playing a character modelled on Dylan. If that sounds at all confusing, don’t worry. As delightfully well acted as “I’m Not There” is (featuring the likes of Cate Blanchett and Richard Gere) nobody really seems to be able to make sense of this Todd Haynes-directed film. In an interview with the New York Times, Ledger compared “I’m Not There” to a Rubik’s Cube, saying “I think it’s one of those films that you have to kind of accept and invite instead of trying to challenge and solve.” The film was Ledger’s first collaboration with “Dark Knight” co-star Christian Bale. The Australian actor played the fictional version of Bale’s character Jack Rollins in a movie within the movie. “I’m Not There” has the sad distinction of being the last film to be released while Ledger was still alive, being released just two months before his death.
