  • Thirty years ago, in 1994, the biggest fashion trends were denim, velvet, and animal print.

  • Kate Moss nailed the "model-off-duty" look, and jeans were a style staple.

  • Red-carpet looks were noticeably more casual than the glamorous and out-there looks of today.

You might be surprised to realize that 1994 was 30 years ago — and how much style has changed since then.

It wasn't out of the ordinary to see the year's biggest stars rocking jeans, overalls, or miniskirts on the red carpet. Animal print and simple dresses were also in vogue, complemented by sheer black tights.

Here's a look back at the biggest style trends of 1994.

"Friends" premiered in September 1994, and the characters' costumes reflected some of the biggest style trends of the time.

From Jennifer Aniston's iconic "Rachel" haircut to Lisa Kudrow's bohemian style, which often consisted of denim or maxi-length dresses, each cast member had their own unique style that reflected the most popular trends of the '90s.

"I didn't want it to be sort of bringing back something," costume designer Debra McGuire told Entertainment Weekly in 2019 of creating Phoebe's eccentric style. "I wanted it to be reminiscent of bohemian life, but I wanted it to have a more contemporary feeling."

Denim wasn't just popular for dresses.

While attending an event in Bel Air, California, actor Halle Berry was photographed wearing rolled denim shorts, lace-up boots, long socks, and a cropped sweater.

From the fit to the medium wash, these shorts couldn't be more '90s.

Overalls were also popular, even for red-carpet events.

Male celebrities like Brad Pitt also kept it casual on the red carpet in grunge-inspired looks.

Thanks to popular bands like Nirvana and the grunge movement, men's looks often had a more laid-back approach.

Other stars opted for sleek and simple slip dresses. Sarah Jessica Parker took an edgy approach with this outfit.

The slip dress is an early '90s trend that's come back in style in recent years.

"There's no look more emblematic of the 1990s than the slip dress," Vogue writer Laird Borrelli-Persson wrote of the trend in 2022. "This little nothing of a dress, which has long since come out from under, has become a staple of contemporary wardrobes."

Supermodel Naomi Campbell showed that the slip dress could be glamorous.

To attend an event in December 1994, Campbell wore a crystal-embroidered slip dress, silver heels, and a matching clutch bag.

People also layered up with leather motorcycle jackets.

Many iconic '90s looks, like this outfit worn by Cindy Crawford to a Rolling Stones concert in October 1994, had a muted palette that mainly consisted of black, white, and other neutral colors.

Velvet jackets and suits were also popular.

Animal print is another trend that dominated 1994.

This Kate Moss look has shown up in recent fashion trends, from the feather-trimmed opera-length gloves to the matching sleek minidress.

"Like a great shoe or bag, the opera glove has become an easy way to take a look from good to great," Vogue writer Christian Allaire wrote in December 2022. "Matched with a classic LBD, it does all the work for the ensemble."

Embroidered dresses and matching sets were a major trend in 1994.

"Clueless" wasn't released until 1995, but plaid was already a major fashion trend a year prior.

Perhaps the most famous fashion moment of 1994 was Princess Diana's "revenge dress."

The royal wore the velvet, off-the-shoulder minidress on the same night that a controversial King Charles — then Prince Charles — documentary aired, in which he admitted to having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.

On the night in question, Diana arrived at the Serpentine Gallery wearing a short black dress with a plunging neckline and sheer black tights.

Ever since, the dress has been widely known as "The Revenge Dress," and other stars appeared to be inspired by the look.
