Phoebe Dynevor Laments Finding More Roles for Men Than Women Her Age

In a new interview published on Wednesday, Phoebe Dynevor has opened up about the struggles she’s faced in Hollywood while trying to land substantial roles.

The Bridgerton alum admitted to The Evening Standard that while she found a satisfying starring role in Netflix’s psychological thriller Fair Play, she feels she hasn’t found the success she expected. “I have read some great scripts recently. And yeah, I probably shouldn’t be saying this, but there is still, like, not that many parts going,” she said.

Dynevor then delved into the gender imbalance she’s perceived while trying to expand her career. “There is such a space for male actors… there are so many of them. And they’re all great. They’re all very talented young men, and they do not stop working, and good for them. But you know, when I think about the girls my age… there’s way more room for them and there is still not enough room for us,” she explained. “It’s a really good time for older women which is amazing and there’s a lot for these young men, but not a lot for the actresses that I know in my age bracket.”

And Dynevor says she hopes to start producing to help “create” the missing parts.

“I eventually want to produce,” she said. “I would like to create the material that I feel is missing. I don’t know when that will be, but it’s a dream of mine.”

Dynevor isn’t the only actress to speak out about this struggle. During The Hollywood Reporter‘s actress roundtable, Greta Lee referenced to Margot Robbie that the Barbie star started her production company LuckyChap because “the men always had the best parts in the scripts you’re getting.” Robbie confirmed this, saying, “Every time I read them, I’d be like, ‘Ah but the male role…’ I was like, nope, we’ve got to make it so you read the female role and you’re like, ‘She’s got the best scenes. She’s got all the moments. She’s got it.'”
