The Stone Pony is hallowed ground when it comes to Bruce Springsteen lore. So when visiting artists come to play at the legendary seaside club, it’s a classy gesture to pay homage to The Boss with a tasteful cover.

Phoebe Bridgers tipped her proverbial cap to Springsteen on Monday night during the encore for her headlining set at Stone Pony’s Summer Stage, which fills the parking lot adjacent to the venue that helped put the Jersey Shore on the map as a live music destination.

After ripping through a 16-song set that included favorites from her first two records, Stranger in the Alps and Punisher, Bridgers gently began to strum “Stolen Car,” off of Springsteen’s 1980 double album, The River. Before Bridgers began to sing, she added that she was particularly inspired by Patty Griffin’s rendition of the song, which the artist recorded for her 2002 record, 1000 Kisses.

Although it was the first time Bridgers played “Stolen Car” live, it’s not the only time she’s covered Bruce live: In 2018, she covered “I’m On Fire” during her show at a smaller venue down the street, Asbury Lanes (there’s also a recording online of Bridgers playing “I’m On Fire” in 2013 at the Echoplex in Los Angeles).

Artists have been feeling the love for The Boss lately, with Coldplay inviting Springsteen out to play “Working on a Dream” and “Dancing in the Dark” at their recent MetLife Stadium show.

The “Phoebe Bridgers Reunion Tour” continues Tuesday with a two-night run at Prospect Park Bandshell in Brooklyn featuring opening act MUNA, followed by a Forest Hills Stadium show in Queens that’s set to feature a “surprise special guest.” Following the Queens concert, Bridgers will hop across the pond for a leg of the tour that will have her playing UK and European dates through July.

Meanwhile, Springsteen recently announced that the E Street Band was reuniting for the first time in six years for a massive world tour, which kicks off with an as-yet-unannounced US leg in the spring followed by a run of UK and European stadium shows taking place over the summer. A second North American leg will follow in the fall.
