Fans started speculating that the “Kyoto” singer and the comedian were dating in late 2022, around the same time that breakup rumors began swirling about Bridgers and her then-boyfriend, actor Paul Mescal. The couple had been linked since 2020 and were rumored to be engaged.

Though both Bridgers and Mescal have avoided speaking about their breakup directly, the Normal People actor told The Hollywood Reporter in February 2023 that he might be ready to open up about the split "maybe at some point" in the future. "It's just difficult territory," he added.

Meanwhile, Bridgers has also yet to officially confirm her romance with Burnham, though the pair have been spotted together numerous times — including when they were accidentally featured in the background of a TikTok shared by Keith Urban.

"Every bone in my body wants to plagiarize this," she captioned the photo posted to her Instagram Story, Insider reported at the time.

August 4, 2021: Phoebe Bridgers and Bo Burnham perform together

In August 2021, Bridgers and Burnham made a surprise guest appearance at Pete Holmes’ monthly “Living at Largo” show in Los Angeles, marking the first live performance of the comedian’s viral song, “That Funny Feeling.”

According to Variety, Bridgers first performed her songs “Motion Sickness” and “Moon Song” before signaling for Burnham to join her onstage for “That Funny Feeling.”

“I’m gonna play a song I wish I wrote,” the singer reportedly said to the crowd. “I know I love something when it fills me with rage.”

During the song, Bridgers sang lead vocals while Burnham played the keyboard and added background vocals.

December 2022: Phoebe Bridgers’ lyrics hint at her breakup with Paul Mescal

In December 2022, new song lyrics prompted fans to speculate that Bridgers and then-boyfriend actor Paul Mescal had broken up. The track “Ghost in the Machine," which is on SZA’s sophomore album SOS, features a verse by Bridgers that seemingly refers to an argument that took place at The Ludlow Hotel in New York City.

Amid breakup rumors about Bridgers and Mescal, anonymous gossip account Deux Moi began sharing messages from followers claiming to have spotted the singer and Bo Burnham spending time together in various spots around Los Angeles.

One message claimed that Bridgers and Burnham were seen “cuddling” at the Magic Castle club, while another said they were kissing at a dive bar.

December 12, 2022: Matty Healy kisses Phoebe Bridgers in front of Bo Burnham

That same month, the singer appeared in an Instagram photo shared by pal Matty Healy, in which she and The 1975 frontman share a kiss in front of Burnham.

“Gay Poets Society,” Healy captioned the post, referencing the 1989 film Dead Poets Society. In the photo, Bridgers and Healy kiss while Burnham stands behind them, a hand placed on each of their shoulders.

At the time, Billboard reported that fans were up in arms in the comments, with some asking where Mescal was.

A week after they appeared in Matty Healy’s Instagram post, Bridgers and Burnham were seen attending a comedy show together in NYC. Jezebel reported that the pair sat together in the crowd of the one-woman show KATE, starring comedian Kate Berlant, which was held at the Connelly Theater in New York, and directed by Burnham himself.

A Jezebel staff member in the audience reported that after the play started 45 minutes late and was eventually canceled, Burnham got on stage to apologize and then sat down next to Bridgers, where he “proceeded to give her his undivided and doting attention.” The reporter labeled the interaction as “flirtatious.”

November 17, 2023: Phoebe Bridgers and Bo Burnham are seen at a restaurant in Malibu

In January 2023, a photo obtained by TMZ surfaced showing Bridgers and Burnham at a restaurant together in Malibu two months earlier. According to the outlet’s source, the photo was taken on Nov. 17, 2022, and the pair sat at a corner table and talked until their to-go order was ready, then left the establishment.

January 13, 2023: Phoebe Bridgers and Bo Burnham are seen in the airport together

Shortly after announcing her father’s death, Bridgers was spotted walking through LAX airport along with Burnham. In an interview with Them in March, the singer recalled being “bullied” by fans while traveling to her father’s funeral.

"I'm coming from a place of literally — I'm feeling it in my body as I'm saying, but — people with my picture as their Twitter picture, who claim to like my music, f---ing bullied me at the airport on the way to my father's funeral this year," she said in an interview with boygenius bandmates Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour stop in Philadelphia seemed to be a date night for Bridgers and Burnham. While hanging out in the VIP section of the audience at Lincoln Financial Field, the pair were seen taking in the show thanks to a TikTok shared by country star Keith Urban.

The musician posted a video of himself and his wife Nicole Kidman dancing along to Swift’s song "Style" and the beginning of "Blank Space," captioning his post, "We love ya @Taylor Swift."

In a May 2023 interview with the Wall Street Journal along with her boygenius bandmates, Bridgers opened up about the recent speculation over her personal life.

Despite being spotted in public several times together, Bridgers and Burnham managed to keep their romance low key — until the “Motion Sickness” singer apparently “soft-launched” the relationship on Instagram.

On Aug. 6, 2023, Bridgers shared a black-and-white photo to her Instagram Story that showed the musician seated on a piano bench with her arm around a man seated next to her. The image is taken from behind and Bridgers didn’t tag Burnham, so fans can’t be certain that it’s him.

However, as Vanity Fair pointed out, the photographer reposted the photo to her own story and added a heart emoji, leading many to believe that Bridgers was subtly confirming the romance.

February 4, 2023: Bo Burnham supports Phoebe Bridgers at the Grammy Awards

Burnham and Bridgers were spotted talking to Taylor Swift during the 66th annual Grammy Awards, which turned out to be a big night for her.

She won four Grammys, including best alternative music album for boygenius' The Record, best rock song and best rock performance for "Not Strong Enough," and best pop duo/group performance for "Ghost in the Machine" with SZA.
