Petersburg COVID cases fall 13.9%; Virginia cases surge 20.1%

New coronavirus cases leaped in Virginia in the week ending Sunday, rising 20.1% as 8,522 cases were reported. The previous week had 7,098 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Virginia ranked 18th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 7.7% from the week before, with 298,674 cases reported. With 2.56% of the country's population, Virginia had 2.85% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 13 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Petersburg reported 31 cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 36 cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 9,379 cases and 144 deaths.

Colonial Heights reported minus 47 cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 20 cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 5,877 cases and 106 deaths.

Hopewell reported 44 cases and two deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 11 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 7,207 cases and 123 deaths.

Prince George County reported 46 cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 36 cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 10,783 cases and 82 deaths.

Dinwiddie County reported 35 cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 19 cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 6,802 cases and 101 deaths.

Sussex County reported 13 cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported five cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 2,701 cases and 44 deaths.

Within Virginia, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Buchanan County with 1,233 cases per 100,000 per week; Dickenson County with 1,173; and Bristol with 1,163. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were Fairfax County, with 1,220 cases; Chesterfield County, with 452 cases; and Richmond , with 428. Weekly case counts rose in 79 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Buchanan, Fairfax and Lee counties.

Across Virginia, cases fell in 51 counties, with the best declines in Wise County, with -285 cases from 43 a week earlier; in Washington County, with -191 cases from 48; and in Wythe County, with -157 cases from 20.

In Virginia, 108 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 80 people were reported dead.

A total of 2,095,882 people in Virginia have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 21,957 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 96,699,237 people have tested positive and 1,062,564 people have died.

Virginia's COVID-19 hospital admissions rising

USA TODAY analyzed federal hospital data as of Sunday, Oct. 9. Likely COVID patients admitted in the state:

  • Last week: 1,766

  • The week before that: 1,691

  • Four weeks ago: 1,885

  • The week before that: 49,835

  • Four weeks ago: 58,231

Hospitals in 18 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 15 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 29 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
