Peter Sarsgaard may be leading a facial-hair renaissance with the dark, super-thick beard he was spotted wearing this week. The 43-year-old actor was sporting the (presumably fake) plumage for his role in the forthcoming Experimenter, in which he portrays social psychologist Stanley Milgram, known for his  controversial 1974 Obedience to Authority study.

Here are five other actors who have recently grown better-looking beards for movie roles:

Mel Gibson beard Blood Father

1. Mel Gibson is letting his facial hair loose these days while he films Blood Father. Based on Peter Craig’s best-selling novel, Gibson plays an ex-con out to protect his previously estranged daughter from a drug hit.

2. Noted onscreen chameleon Guy Pearce grew a gob of facial hair to play an ex-military man in future dystopian Australia in The Rover. (Robert Pattinson also got scruffy for the indie film, now in select theaters.)

John Hurt Chris Evans beard Snowpiercer

3 and 4. Both John Hurt and Chris Evans got beardy for Snowpiercer, in limited release starting Friday. In case anyone has bets riding on who can grow it longer, Hurt is the winner by several lengths — though Evans gets major points for thickness.

Hugh Jackman shaved head beard Blackbeard Pan

5. Hugh Jackman has never feared the beard, but he recently added a new level of hair complexity by pairing facial growth with a shaved head to play Blackbeard in Pan, the upcoming Peter Pan prequel.

Nick Offerman beard

6.Oft-bearded Parks and Rec star Nick Offerman went clean-shaven for 22 Jump Street, leaving only a bushy mustache in place. But the 43-year-old actor — seen here in May — has since ushered in more face-fuzz. Having just wrapped Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups, Offerman is also appearing in two dramatic comedies that are currently underway: A Walk in the Woods and Welcome to Happiness. It’s hard to tell just which the beard is for, so maybe we’ll see versions in all three.
