Actor Peter Crombie, best known to TV fans for playing deranged stalker “Crazy” Joe Davola on Seinfeld, has died at the age of 71, our sister site Deadline reports. He reportedly died on Wednesday following a short-lived illness.

Crombie appeared in films like Se7en, Natural Born Killers and Born on the Fourth of July, along with guest roles on Law & Order, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, L.A. Law, NYPD Blue and Walker: Texas Ranger. But his most famous role came in 1992 when he debuted as Joe Davola on a Season 4 episode of Seinfeld. Joe Davola was an intense writer who became enraged when he learned Kramer was having a party and didn’t invite him. He kicked Kramer in the head — luckily, Kramer was wearing a helmet at the time — and later turned his anger towards Jerry.

Crombie appeared in a total of five episodes of Seinfeld in Season 4, with Joe Davola becoming an ongoing adversary of Jerry’s. In “The Opera,” Davola developed a romantic obsession with Elaine, dressing up like a clown to terrorize her and Jerry as they went to the opera to see a production of Pagliacci. Then he reappeared in the Season 4 finale, “The Pilot,” attacking Jerry during the taping of his NBC pilot.
