Pete Rock Says Joint Album With Common Will Restore Feeling Of Excitement Within Hip-Hop

As Hip-Hop continues to evolve, artists and fans continue to discuss whether the genre is better or worse than the golden age of the 90s, especially in a year where Hip-Hop hasn’t had as big of a presence near the top of the Billboard charts. Pete Rock recently asserted his belief that his forthcoming joint album with Common will restore the feeling of being excited about Hip-Hop.

The Bronx, NY producer shared a screenshot of HipHopDX’s post about the fact he was working with the Chicago wordsmith to Instagram on Wednesday (Sept. 13) and sounded off on what people can expect from the collaboration. “You ever miss that feeling of a good release in hip hop?” he asked in the caption. “Remember how exciting that felt??? We both excited as a mafugga.”

He continued, speaking on the competitive elements of the genre. “I always feel like i got something to prove but its just fun to me to make music,” the 53-year-old producer wrote. “Competing to make good music with all the different personalities involved today just gotten dry. We love hip hop and you will know just how much stay tuned!!!” Check out the post below.

Common first announced the project during his Monday (Sept. 11) appearance on MSNBC’s The Beat With Ari Melber, and revealed it will be influenced by 90’s Hip-Hop.

“I been listening to a lot of ’90s Hip Hop because I been creating a new project,” the Be artist said. “I’m working on a new album with Pete Rock and just, the energy of that music, whether it’s Brand Nubian, A Tribe Called Quest, or De La Soul, because they just got their music on streaming, it’s been inspiring to hear.”

The 51-year-old rapper stated that he is in a “great space.” This could have a lot to do with the fact that he and Pete Rock are no strangers to working with one another. They joined forces on “The B**ch In Yoo,” which was famously targeted at Ice Cube, as well as “Verbal Murder 2.”

They have also appeared on each others’ joint albums with other acts, namely Common’s The Dreamer/Believer with No I.D. in 2011 and Rock’s Rock Don’t Smoke Rock with Smoke DZA in 2016. Check out “The B**ch In Yoo” below.
