Pete Holmes and his wife, Valerie Chaney, have a memorable engagement story

Comedian Pete Holmes has been married to his wife, Valerie Chaney, for over six years.

Holmes doesn’t share much about his family life on his social media pages, which are dedicated to his comedy career. However, Chaney has a public Instagram page where she regularly shares photos of their family and her own personal life.

In March 2023, Chaney went on Instagram to share a series of photos as a birthday tribute to Holmes. “You are my coziest pal and I love you so much!” she wrote in the caption.

“This is how you love me,” she continued. “With a constant big fat YES! Yes to my weird thoughts, yes to my jokes my fears my dreams my stories my shadow my desires my cravings… all of it!! Everyone should get to be loved like this and I’m so glad our daughter gets to have this kind of example of love.”

While Chaney generally keeps out of the spotlight, there are still plenty of things to learn about her. Here is everything there is to know about Pete Holmes’ wife, Valerie Chaney.

She’s a dance and fitness instructor 

One of the things Chaney shares the most often on her Instagram account is her dance videos. She is a dance fitness instructor at a wellness center in Ojai, California, where she has has taught Friday morning dance classes each week.

In an Instagram post from March 2022, Chaney shared a flier to an event she was a part of where she was teaching a cardio dance class and communal dancing.

The following year, she posted a video of herself dancing with a caption that included a review from someone who had taken her dance class. “'Val’s class is like watching a 12 year old girl have a dance party in her bedroom… Except she’s friendly and inclusive and very skillful at teaching you how to join in the fun!' ” it read.

She practices meditation

Chaney isn’t just a cardio dance instructor: she also practices and teaches meditation. She sometimes posts photos on Instagram announcing wellness events and retreats that she is hosting or taking part in.

In November 2022, she shared a photo on Instagram advertising a virtual day-long meditation retreat that she was hosting. It featured yoga, meditation and mindful movement. The previous month, she also advertised a free 4-week online mindfulness course that included meditation practice.

Meditation seems to be something that Holmes and Chaney have in common. The comedian has talked about his meditation practice in interviews before. In a 2019 appearane on CNN, he said, “I feel like I’m meditating all the time. I never stop meditating. I’m so happy to share this practice, and that’s what it is, a practice.”

They got engaged on a hot air balloon

In February 2017, Holmes and Chaney got engaged in a very special way: while on a hot air balloon. He announced their relationship milestone on X (formerly known as Twitter) alongside a photo of the two of them embracing on the balloon.

Speaking with the Los Angeles Times in 2018, Holmes opened up about their engagement, sharing that when he first met Chaney, she mentioned wanting to ride in a hot air balloon. So, for the proposal, he took her to Santa Barbara, California to pop the question on one.

The one issue with his plan: the man driving the balloon was right on top of them in the small wicker basket. “I could feel the heat of his breath and the tickle of his whiskers, and I’m nervous, and he’s operating the thing," Holmes said.

He added that he was so flustered by the man’s behavior that he couldn't focus on proposing. After Holmes asked, he said there was a “moment of silence,” and then the man said, “A lot of girls say ‘no.’ "

Holmes said Chaney found the whole situation funny, saying, “We knew a story had just happened. That’s who you marry, not the girl who says, ‘That wasn’t what I wanted.’ "

The couple married in October 2017 and they have shared their celebrations on social media every few years, including their fifth wedding anniversary.

They share a child

In July 2018, Chaney shared a photo on Instagram of Holmes snuggling her pregnant belly with the caption, “Does this pregnancy make me look fat? And a little cross-eyed?”

She announced the birth of their daughter on Sept. 25, 2018, with another Instagram post.

Alongside two photos of a newborn baby wrapped in a blanket, she wrote, “Welcome to the world Baby Lila! There’s laughter and music and dogs and bubbles and even when there’s pain and suffering there’s always love and light to be found. Living is an act of hope. You’re gonna love it!”

In January 2023, Chaney shared a sweet photo on Instagram of herself, Holmes and Lila cuddling on the couch. In the caption, she wrote, “Happy New Year from us! Here’s to unbrushed hair, too much TV and being madly in love!”

They host a podcast together

Holmes hosts a popular weekly comedy podcast called You Made It Weird, which features him interviewing a celebrity guest, usually a fellow comedian.

In August 2020, he introduced a spinoff version of the podcast called We Made It Weird and its discussions are similar to the original show, but there are no celebrity guests: it’s just Holmes and Chaney talking and joking around.

She’s into poetry 

In between photos of her daughter, videos of herself dancing and snaps from her travels, Chaney sometimes posts her own original poetry.

She shared a photo of a snippet of one of her poems in June 2023 and it read in part, "You might not remember / So I’ll remember for you / What you said that summer night.”
