The animal rights organization is selling a Halloween costume inspired by Pete Davidson's infamous voicemail in response to criticism for buying a puppy from a pet store.
It all started back in May, when Davidson was spotted with then-girlfriend Chase Sui Wonders buying a Cavapoo dog for his mother at Citipups in Manhattan. "It's tragic that Pete didn't seek out a borough-born mutt from a city animal shelter, because a scrappy New Yorker with charm, personality, and unconventional handsomeness could have been his perfect match," Daphna Nachminovitch, PETA's senior VP of cruelty investigations, said in a statement to TMZ.
Pete called the VP and left an intense voicemail criticizing her for not doing her research. "I just wanted to let you know I'm severely allergic to dogs so I have to get a specific breed. I'm only not allergic to Cavapoos, and those types of dogs, and my mom's fucking dog who's two years old died a week prior and we're all so sad," he said in the voicemail.
The 29-year-old continued, "So I had to get a specific dog. So why don't you do your research before you fucking create news stories for people because you're a boring, tired, bitch. Fuck you and suck my dick."
Pete eventually apologized for his "poor choice of words," saying, "I shouldn't have said what I said, but I am not sorry for standing up for myself and my family." The actor explained he hadn't seen his mother and sister cry like that "in over 20 years" after the death of their dog Henry. The Cavapoo was bought to cheer them up.
“It’s too late for Pete to undo his puppy purchase or that voicemail, but it’s never too late to save a dog’s life by choosing adoption and shunning pet shops and other dog breeders,” said PETA President Ingrid Newkirk in a statement released today (Sept. 6). “PETA trusts that the ‘King of Staten Island’ will see the joke in having everyone dress like him this Halloween, all for a good cause: fixing homeless-animal overpopulation.”
The costume includes a mask of Davidson's face, an "I Should Have Adopted" hoodie, a hat with a censored expletive, and a plush dog wearing a "Shelter Dogs Rule" bandana. The costume is available for pre-order for $84.99, with proceeds benefitting spaying and neutering surgeries for dogs.
