Peso Pluma to perform at the Stockton Arena this October

Mexican singer Peso Pluma will be making a stop in Stockton this October.

Pluma will kick off his concert at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12 at the Stockton Arena as part of his Doble P Tour. Tickets for the concert start at $99 on Ticketmaster. VIP and those who want to get close to action will have to dish out $1,200 or more.

Pluma reached popularity when he duetted with the regional Mexican group Eslabon Armado for their song “Ella Baila Sola,” reaching the top of music charts.

The song “Ella Baila Sola,” hit “No.1 on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart” in April. It also was the “first regional Mexican song to reach the top 10 of the all-genre chart,” Billboard reported.

Pluma's third and most recent studio album “Génesis” was released on June 22. It hit No. 1 a month later.

His music is part of a new subgenre called “corridos tumbados,” which translates to “knocked or lying down,” and the already-established “corridos bélicos,” which means “warlike,” USA TODAY reported.

His music which is “corridos” are Mexican narrative songs. They are also known as ballads which recounter some type of “heroic struggle.”

The narcocorrido genre, often accused of glorifying drug cartels, has been exploding in popularity, reaching global pop charts and filling arenas, USA TODAY reported.

"The corridos have always been very attacked and very demonized," Peso Pluma, told The Associated Press after performing at Coachella in April. "At the end of the day, it's music ― you see it in rap, you see it in hip hop, you see it in reggaeton."

Death threat

Pluma's record label Prajin Music Group announced that his concert scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 14 at Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico, just two days after Stockton’s concert, was canceled.

"Our objective is to protect the fans and the team," the statement, which was shared on Pluma's and the label's Instagram stories, read in Spanish. "For the security of everyone involved, we will be canceling our show in Tijuana. Many thanks to all of our fans for understanding. We love you."

The cause of the concert's cancellation was not disclosed in the announcement, USA TODAY reported.

The 24-year-old was threatened with a banner posted on a bridge in the border town of Tijuana on Sept. 12. The banner was signed by the Jalisco New Generation CartelThe Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported.

Pluma performed “Lady Gaga” one of the songs from his new album at the MTV Music Awards the same day he was threatened by the Mexican cartel.

This is not the only concert that has been canceled or postponed for his Doble P Tour.

His show in Milwaukee, Wi., scheduled for Sept. 18, was postponed just 48 hours before he was set to take the stage. This was one of four concerts that week postponed for “unforeseen circumstances," reported the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, part of the USA TODAY Network.

In California, Pluma canceled a concert in San Diego due to high demand. His concert scheduled at the Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre at SDSU was moved to Chula Vista at the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre, which is five times bigger.

“Due to incredible fan demand, the Peso Pluma concert moved to North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre - same date - Sept. 30, 2023,” the San Diego State University Associated Students website states.

Mexican artist's death threats

The Zapopan, Jalisco native is not the only Mexican artist who has received death threats in Tijuana.

In February, Sinaloa narcocorrido band Grupo Arriesgado which sings about drug culture was forced to leave a Tijuana mall while signing autographs when men fired shots and forced the musicians to leave the city, reported the Louisville Courier Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network.

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel, the main rival of the Sinaloa Cartel, left a written message behind giving the band a few hours to get out of Tijuana or face death. Grupo Arriesgado, which translates to "risky group," canceled its Tijuana concert and later scrapped its upcoming tour dates in the U.S., USA TODAY reported.

Chalino Sánchez comparison

TikTok users took to the app to point out how "history repeats" with Peso Pluma's death threat. Videos surfaced with “El Rey del Corrido,” Mexican singer and songwriter Chalino Sánchez's last performance where he allegedly received a death threat note while performing.

Sánchez, whose real name was Rosalino "Chalino" Sánchez Félix was born in Culiacán, Sinaloa where he was killed. He is often known as the trailblazer for narcocorridos.

“Sánchez was shot and killed after a concert in Culiacán, Sinaloa in 1992 where he was handed a note from the crowd believed to be a death threat,” Billboard reported. “In the morning, he was found dead. He is survived by his daughter. His son Adán Chalino Sánchez, also a recording artist, died in 2004 in a car crash.”

Sánchez was performing "Alma Enamorada," when he received the note. He was just 31 years old at the time of his death.
