MIAMI GARDENS — Ed Sheeran had a Perfect day Saturday.

Long before he took the stage for a 45-minute set before thousands of sun-soaked fans at the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, Sheeran was up and planted in front of a TV at 7 a.m. to watch his beloved Ipswich Town earn promotion into the English Premier League after a 22-year absence.

Sheeran isn’t just a lifelong fan of Ipswich. He’s a sponsor of the team, which helps explain how, after players secured their 2-0 win over Huddersfield, they were FaceTiming with Sheeran as he raised a glass in their honor.

“I’m back on Wednesday,” Sheeran told them. “Do you guys wanna go out?”

“Absolutely!” forward George Hirst replied.

First, Sheeran had business in South Florida. As the crowd swayed, he performed a string of hits including “Shape of You,” “Thinking Out Loud,” “Shivers” and, naturally, “Perfect.” At one point, a fan handed him what appeared to be a pair of sneakers that had been customized for him.

“Can I keep these?” he asked. When the answer was a resounding yes, Sheeran grinned.

Sheeran lives near Ipswich.

“I’ve seen it go through really difficult times and I know that being in the Premier League is going to bring, not just real excitement to the football club, but also real excitement and joy to the town and lift it up, which is really important,” Sheeran told ESPN.

Fans of the FX series “Welcome to Wrexham” can relate to what Sheeran is feeling. Ipswich not only made the leap to the Premiership this year, but it earned promotion two years in a row, first to the Championship, which is difficult in English football.

“What’s brilliant about football is it is very unpredictable and you never know what’s going to happen,” Sheeran said.

Sheeran posted his joy on social media. In one video, he takes a sip of beer — when your team gets promoted, it’s never too early in the day for a beer. A fan asks, “What does that taste like?”

Sheeran’s reply: “It tastes like promotion!”
