When I say 2023 has been filled with amazing TV shows (and performances) so far, I mean it. There are so many good shows returning and premiering this year, and one of the ones I've been waiting patiently for is Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Adapted by showrunners Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz, who worked closely with author Rick Riordan, this upcoming Disney+ series follows Percy Jackson, a modern demigod who is just coming to terms with his newfound divine powers.

Riordan also serves as an executive producer on the series alongside Jon and Dan. Prior to Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Steinberg and Shotz notably worked on shows like Black Sails, The Old Man, and See.

Percy's just trying to find his way and fit in when suddenly the all-powerful god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. Alongside his friends Annabeth and Grover, Percy embarks on an adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is based on the beloved book series of the same name by Riordan, and this marks the second time it has been adapted for the screen.

Previously, Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, and Alexandra Daddario starred in two films based on the first two novels in the series in 2010 and 2013, respectively. The films notably received mixed reviews — The Lightning Thief holds a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes — with fans of the book series clamoring for a new adaptation for years.

This time around, Walker Scobell, who notably starred alongside Ryan Reynolds in The Adam Project, will take on the role of Percy Jackson alongside Leah Sava Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri as Annabeth and Grover, all of whom are front and center in the first teaser trailer.

The trio will be joined by a stacked list of guest stars, who will help portray some of the notable gods and characters from Riordan's universe. Some of whom include Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hermes, Megan Mullally as Alecto, Toby Stephens as Poseidon, Jason Mantzoukas as Dionysus, Jay Duplass as Hades, and Timothy Omundson as Hephaestus.

Rounding out the supporting cast is Virginia Kull, Glynn Turman, Adam Copeland, Charlie Bushnell, Dior Goodjohn, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Olivea Morton, Suzanne Cryer, and Timm Sharp.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians will also mark the final TV appearance for the legendary Lance Reddick, who died suddenly in March 2023. Lance plays Zeus, and you can hear his iconic voice in this first teaser trailer.

The series will debut on Disney+ on Dec. 20, 2023 with two episodes followed by new episodes weekly. These first two episodes are written by Riordan and Steinberg, and directed by James Bobin.

Anyway, you can watch the full new Percy Jackson and the Olympians teaser trailer below, which debuted today on Percy's birthday, and freak out alongside me over how great this looks — also, BRB, running to go re-read The Lightning Thief.

And remember, Percy Jackson and the Olympians starts streaming on Disney+ on Dec. 20, 2023!
