‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ to Premiere on Hulu Alongside Disney+

“Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” the Disney+ series based on the book series of the same name, will concurrently launch on Hulu on Dec. 20.

Only the first episode will stream on Hulu, while Disney+ will get two episodes on the premiere date, followed by new episodes weekly. Additionally, Episode 1 will remain on Hulu only through Jan. 31.

The news was announced by “Percy Jackson” author and series co-creator Rick Riordan during the show’s red carpet premiere at the Met Museum in New York City on Wednesday.

The series marks a long-waited adaptation for the IP, as Riordan published the first “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” book in 2005. 20th Century Fox released two “Percy Jackson” films in 2010 and 2013, but changes to the books and Riordan’s lack of involvement made them unpopular among the fanbase, and the studio never adapted the last three books.

“After the movie experience, I basically wrote off Hollywood for a long, long time,” Riordan said in an October cover story with Variety. “I really didn’t want to have anything to do with the film industry. There were many years of me saying, ‘I don’t want to engage. I don’t want to think about other adaptations. I’m done.’ But when it started to become clear that something was going to happen with me or without me, I had a long talk with Becky, my wife. We said, ‘Well, if something’s going to happen, it’s probably best to give it one more shot.’”

“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” follows Percy (Walker Scobell) on a dangerous quest. Outrunning monsters and outwitting gods, he must journey across America to return Zeus’ (Lance Reddick) master bolt and stop an all-out war. With the help of his quest mates Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries) and Grover (Aryan Simhadri), Percy’s journey will lead him closer to the answers he seeks: how to fit into a world where he feels out of place, and find out who he’s destined to be.

Riordan created the series alongside Jonathan E. Steinberg, who showruns with Dan Shotz. All three serve as executive producers alongside Riordan’s wife Rebecca Riordan; the Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell and D.J. Goldberg; Bert Salke; James Bobin; Jim Rowe; Monica Owusu-Breen; Anders Engström; and Jet Wilkinson.
