Twitter freaks out over video of archeologists opening 2,500-year-old sarcophagus: 'Super disrespectful'

A group of archeologists discovered 59 coffins holding the remains of Egyptian priests and officials from around 672 to 525 B.C. Reuters reported that they were buried in three 30 to 40-foot shafts, alongside some statues of the ancient Egyptian god Seker, who was often associated with the underworld and resurrection.
One of the tombs was opened in front of reporters, revealing the unidentified mummy that had been inside for 2,500 years. If you immediately wonder how that smelled, Egyptians embalmed the bodies in essential oils and removed and jarred the organs prior to burying — so they were clearly thinking very, very, very far ahead.

Twitter absolutely freaked out, saying that 2020 was not the year we should be opening up tombs.

Several Twitter users were also furious and found it “disrespectful” that the archeologists had found a new way to disturb people of color.

In regard to the group who unearthed the tombs, it’s backed by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. The video features Dr. Khaled Al-Anani, who has served as the minister of the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities since 2016.
Opening up these tombs and examining the mummies can certainly seem violating and disrespectful of the person’s wishes. But mummies are so well preserved that they offer all sorts of helpful information to paleopathologists and historians. Analyzing the DNA can increase knowledge in diseases, medicine and historical record.
