It’s been ten years since Pentatonix charmed America in the fall of 2011 competing on the NBC show, “The Sing-Off.”

On Friday (June 4), the group — Scott Hoying (baritone), Mitch Grassi (tenor), Kirstin Maldonado (mezzo-soprano), Kevin Olusola (vocal percussion), and Matt Sallee (bass) — surprised fans with a release of a video recreating an iconic moment in its history, singing Lady Gaga’s 2009 duet with Beyoncé, “Telephone.”

“The very first time we all sang ‘Telephone’ together as Pentatonix was literally the day before our audition for ‘The Sing-Off’: June 4th, 2011,” Hoying tells Variety. “The second we started singing, it clicked, and we all knew we had something very special. I absolutely cannot believe it’s been 10 years already and I am incredibly grateful — and feel insanely lucky — that it’s my job to harmonize and perform with my best friends.”

The original lineup — which featured since-departed member Avi Kaplan on bass vocals — won the third season of the NBC show, winning the top prize of $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony Music.

The group went on to release several top selling albums, including “PTX, Vol. II,” debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart and No. 10 on the Billboard 200 in 2013. The group’s holiday offering, “That’s Christmas to Me,” was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), platinum on December 24, 2014, and double platinum on February 11, 2016, becoming the highest-charting holiday album by a group since 1962.

Penatonix went on to win three Grammy Awards, making history as the first a cappella group to win in the categories Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella in 2015 and 2016, and Best Country Duo/Group Performance in 2017.

The group’s most recent outing, “The Lucky Ones,” was released by RCA Records in February.
