Penny Dreadful star Josh Hartnett has opened up about his decision to turn down Superman and Batman, revealing he "didn't want to be boxed in".

While both would be the highlight of any actor's career in this day and age, it seems Harnett wasn't as keen when he was offered the roles.

"At that age it is very easy to become someone else's tool or someone else's puppet," he told Metro. "I was very aware of the choices I was making and I wanted them to be my choices."

Explaining the multiple occasions he turned down the parts, Hartnett admitted that "at the time it didn't seem like the sort of decision I would be talking about 15 years later".

"There were a lot of powers-that-be that wanted me to pursue those films, but I have always been interested in stories about people and I didn't want to be boxed into that superhero type," he added.

"Back then a lot of actors had to fight really hard to get their career back after they played those characters."

In recent years, Hartnett starred in Penny Dreadful as Ethan Chandler, and has also appeared in a number of indie movies.

Meanwhile, in other Penny Dreadful-related news, the show's spin-off series City of Angels was cancelled after one season earlier this year.

"Showtime has decided not to move forward with another season of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels", the show's network said in a statement at the time. "We would like to thank executive producers John Logan, Michael Aguilar and the entire cast and crew for their outstanding work on this project."
