Pennsylvania Teen Dies Nearly a Week After Being Hit by Car While Riding His Skateboard

A 15-year-old boy died in Pennsylvania nearly a week after he was hit by a car while riding his skateboard.

Charlie Thornburg died at the hospital on Monday, according to ABC affiliate WTAE-TV and a message from the family shared on their GoFundMe campaign.

The teen was skateboarding around 5:45 p.m. on Oct. 18 when he was struck at the intersection of Winlock Avenue and Joel Street in Ingram, the Allegheny County Police Department said in a news release.

“My daughter called me hysterically, saying that Charlie was hit by a car,” grandmother Denise Ball told ABC affiliate WTAE-TV on Friday. “They said part of the skull was shattered.”

Police said the victim was in critical condition when he arrived at the hospital.

The teen underwent at least two surgeries and was eventually placed on life support, his family said in a message shared on GoFundMe.

In a final act, his family said that his organs were donated.

Thornburg was a freshman at Montour High School, according to his obituary. He also attended the Culinary Program at Parkway West Technical School and was “an avid Star Wars fan” as well.

“He’s a nice little kid,” neighbor Pat McKee told NBC affiliate WPXI. “I feel sorry for his mom and dad.”

Ball recalled how much he loved to skateboard, noting that he frequently skated on her street. The grandmother also expressed concerns about the area where the collision occurred, according to WTAE-TV.

“There’s limited sight down at that corner,” she explained, adding, “We don’t know exactly how the accident happened.”

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, per the outlets.
