The Peninsula Arts Appreciation Council presents “Heathers: The Musical”

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WJMN) – The Peninsula Arts Appreciation Council is bringing “Big Fun” to the Masonic Red Room on May 2-4th at 7 p.m. with “Heathers: The Musical”.

This dark comedy will have you singing along as they “Shine a Light” on Veronica Sawyer, who is a misfit that somehow finds her way into the popular clique called the Heathers. The musical is based on the 1988 classic movie “Heathers”.

“It kind of follows the story of a girl named Veronica who starts out kind of at the bottom of the totem pole in high school and works her way to the popular crowd and chaos ensues,” said Eliisa Gladwell who is portraying Heather McNamara in this production of “Heathers: The Musical”. “And there’s a lot of twists and turns. It’s a pretty dark comedy.”

The clique gets their unique name because all three of them have the same name.

“So I play one of the Heathers, she’s kind of the second in command to other children, so she really wants her turn in the spotlight,” said Lilith Kontos, who is portraying Heather Duke in this version of “Heathers: The Musical”. “But, you know, she’s kind of been kept down a little bit. So that’s kind of her role within the hierarchy of high school.”

Although the group typically holds their shows in the Vista Theater, the building is currently being restored.

“I’ll be honest, this was a pretty challenging experience, actually,” explains Gladwell. “There was a lot of things that were kind of thrown at us, lots of obstacles we had to overcome. Rehearsal space venues, you know, anything that you can think of. But this cast and crew is phenomenal and we all just kind of really banded together and we’re really excited for an audience.”

Because this musical is a dark comedy, there are some adult themes, so the organization encourages all people under the age of 18 to be supervised by a part or adult guardian.

You can buy tickets for $15 for youth, and $20 for adults online at vistatheater.org/events.
