Colin Farrell is teasing The Batman spinoff Max series The Penguin and is calling it “incredibly violent.”

While promoting Apple TV+’s Sugar, the actor revealed he had just wrapped filming the first season and “stuck a fork in it two weeks ago.”

“It was a long and really wonderful experience,” Farrell said in an interview with MovieZine. “It’s dark, that’s what I can tell you about it. It’s really dark. It’s really heavy, I think, it certainly was doing it. Which is not to say I didn’t have fun, I had an amazing time doing it, but it’s incredibly violent.”

He continued, “It’s one man’s rise to what he’s always dreamed of inhabiting, which is a certain power or social status.”

Farrell reprises his role as Gotham City gangster Oswald Cobblepot from the 2022 Matt Reeves’ film The Batman, which stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader.

“The death of Carmine Falcone at the end of [The Batman] leaves this vacuum in Gotham to be filled, and so there are various people that are grabbing for that power,” he added. “This is Oswald’s journey trying to rise to the top through extraordinary obstacles, and it’s super dark.”

Lauren LeFranc created and penned the series with Farrell, noting that they “wrote a really twisted eight hours of television.”

The Penguin, which will premiere this fall on Max, also stars Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, and Michael Zegen.
