Wood's disappearance captivated the state of Alabama when she first went missing in 2012 but salacious details of her family's history of alleged child sexual abuse soon eclipsed the search for Wood. In "Monster In The Shadows", Wood's mother Chessie, as well as friends and people who loved Wood speak candidly about her life, her family's crimes, and their desire to finally know what happened to the young woman they loved – a young woman who unwittingly became caught up in a shocking scandal. On the day Brittney Wood walked out of her mother's home, Chessie never would have believed it would be the last time they would see each other. She has been searching for answers, for herself, and for Wood's young daughter – who was just 2 years old when her mother disappeared.
“I wanted to make a crime documentary that could actually help the family. I started researching missing person cases in America and I was blown away by the amount there were,” said director and producer Thomas Leader. “Even though there are tens of thousands of missing people, what happened to Brittney Wood stands out. There are so many unanswered questions that I wanted to get answers for, so many twists and turns that I wanted to understand better.”
