In a new interview with Hot 97, actress Paula Patton revealed on Ebro in the Morning that she ghostwrote with her ex-husband Robin Thicke under the name Max Haddington. A quick scan of Thicke’s discography shows that a writer named Max, who we now know was Paula, helped pen more than half a dozen tracks Thicke released on his albums Sex Therapy: The Experience, Love After War, and Blurred Lines.
“We did it together since we were kids. I was with Robin since I was 15 years old,” she said. “You know, Robin and I wrote a lot of songs together. I have, my name on the albums is Max Haddington.”
She explained that she used the fake name because she was afraid of what people would think. “I was like ‘well Max Haddington will just seem like another writer with you, so it doesn’t seem like you’re writing with your girl.'”
Patton then goes on to talk about the “Blurred Lines” controversy. “I’ll only say that I was so proud of him all the way along,” she said. “And it’s so sad that we can’t see what we have until we have it.”
The couple is notorious for their messy divorce. The duo officially split in 2015 after getting married in 2005 and being together for more than two decades. In 2014 they released a statement about the separation that appeared reasonably good-natured. "We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time,” they said, according to People.
But in January 2017, Patton accused Thicke of domestic violence and drug abuse. In a sworn statement, she alleged that Thicke has a "raging, violent temper" and "regularly bedded other women.” His infidelity and abuse were revealed to be the real reason behind the divorce. “Robin quite simply emotionally wore me down," Patton said at the time. "I felt abused, disrespected and depressed. I wanted out of this marriage."
Thicke attempted to make amends after their split by releasing the pathetic 2014 album titled Paula. Clearly, it did not work. He was slapped with a temporary restraining order in 2017, but the pair hashed it out later that year and now share joint custody of their son Julian.
Watch Patton talk about her ghostwriting career in the video above around the 12:35 mark.
