UPDATE: Whew! It turns out that Julianne Hough was only joking about her Billboard Awards neck injury. Hough tweeted a video showing fans her “neck is fine!” and inviting Paula Abdul to come (with her hat) to America’s Got Talent for “a dance off.”

Paula Abdul’s hat trick at the Billboard Music Awards left Julianne Hough hurting — or pretending to be.

During Wednesday night’s show, the “Opposites Attract” dynamo tossed her hat to the crowd while performing, making a direct hit into Hough’s neck. While it seemed OK at the time — and the Footloose star kept dancing in her shiny shorts and bra top suit — Hough later posted a photo to Twitter, which presumably is a joke, with what appears to be a neck brace or towel on and wrote that it was the “result of the honor of being hit in the neck by Paula Abdul’s flying hat.”

The sunny actress, singer and dancer wasn’t holding a grudge though, adding, “Love you, babe.” And Abdul responded that it was done “with love.”

Whether or not she’s really hurt, Hough’s fans surely gave her a laugh with their comments, some with Abdul song references.

Abdul performed a medley including “Straight Up,” “(It’s Just) The Way That You Love Me,” “Opposites Attract,” “Cold Hearted” and “Forever Your Girl” to mark 30 years since she hit No. 1 with four tracks from her debut album, Forever Your Girl. The former American Idol judge received a standing ovation from the audience — and raves for her red carpet arrival.

Hough was a presenter at the show, which was held in Las Vegas.
