Paul Feig Monster Movie ‘Dark Army’ Being Developed at Universal

Universal is developing “Dark Army,” a monster movie based on an original idea from filmmaker Paul Feig (“A Simple Favor,” “Ghostbusters,” “Spy,” “Bridesmaids”).

Feig will write and direct as well as produce for his Universal-based Feigco Productions. Laura Fischer will also produce.

Similar to what’s being done with Blumhouse and Leigh Whannell’s upcoming “Invisible Man” film — inspired by Universal’s classic monster character — instead of pushing forward with the initial notion of an interconnected universe, the studio halted and reassessed after being reminded that passion and relevance led to these characters’ endurance over generations. Universal remains committed to creating compelling filmmaker-driven projects based on characters from the studio’s vast monsters legacy.

Instead of prescribing a mandated updating of these monster stories and making them all part of a larger scheme, the studio loosened these restrictions and open-sourced to filmmakers who were inspired to create their own unique stories.

Feig’s next film, “Last Christmas,” starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding, will be released by Universal on November 8, 2019.

In addition to “Last Christmas,” Feig’s recent projects as producer include Netflix’s “Someone Great” and the critically acclaimed film “A Simple Favor.” Additional upcoming projects Feig is producing include the series “Love Life” for HBO Max starring Anna Kendrick and “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” for Lionsgate TV and NBC, the film “When Michael Met Carrie…and Other People” for Universal, as well as the Stella Meghie-directed romantic comedy “American Princess” starring Issa Rae for 20th Century Fox.

Previous films include the reboot of “Ghostbusters,” “Spy,” “The Heat,” and “Bridesmaids.” A three-time Emmy nominated writer/director and DGA Award winner, Feig is also known for creating the beloved and critically acclaimed series “Freaks and Geeks” and serving as Director and Co-Executive Producer of “The Office.”

Feig is represented by CAA and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern.
