Paul Bettany Tells an Amazing Tom Hanks Fart Story

Even with the endless cycle of celebrity news and gossip, one thing we don’t get enough of is a good old-fashioned star-farting story. Well, Paul Bettany’s got a doozy.

During the London junket for the new comedy Mortdecai, in which he was paired with Johnny Depp, Bettany was discussing the actors he’s had to punch on movie productions. Firewall co-star Harrison Ford was one tough cookie, sure (“He kept telling me to punch him harder,” Bettany tells Yahoo Movies UK). But his Tom Hanks story takes the cake: “The first time I punched him — during the first scene I was on set for doing The Da Vinci Code — I punched him and he farted.”

Bettany, who plays manservant to Depp’s globetrotting playboy in Mortdecai, admits he didn’t know how to respond to that gaseous development. “Hand him a roll of toilet paper,” Depp suggests.

"[Hanks] just looked at me and said, ‘You just made me fart. Isn’t that funny?’" Bettany continues. "I loved him for that."

It’s too bad they didn’t leave that sound effect in. The Da Vinci Code could’ve used the laugh.

Mortdecai is now in theaters.
