Paul Bettany is returning as Vision in new Disney+ series

What is a franchise, if not characters persevering? Marvel's android superhero Vision (Paul Bettany) was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War before being resurrected by his lover Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) in WandaVision. That Disney+ series ended with Wanda saying goodbye to his ghost, but Vision's story is apparently not over. Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that a new Disney+ series will see Bettany reprise his role as Vision, and the streamer is eyeing a 2026 premiere. Variety was first to report the news.

Star Trek: Picard executive producer Terry Matalas has been tapped as showrunner, according to Variety. Matalas reposted Variety's article on Twitter, but has not yet tweeted about it directly.

Representatives for Disney did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment.

When we last saw Vision, at the end of WandaVision, the character's memories had been reconciled with a new white android body. Bettany, at least, has been expecting the day would come for him to once again don Vision's cape.

"At the end of WandaVision, you see Vision fly off and that's a loose end," Bettany told EW in 2022. "And Kevin Feige (president of Marvel Studios) is a man who doesn't really allow loose ends. So I assume at some point I will be putting on my tights and cloak for another outing, but I don't know when that might be."

At this early stage, it's unclear what the premise of this new series might be, though we can make some educated guesses. WandaVision drew from the 2015 Vision comic by Tom King and Gabriel Walta by placing the character in a dream suburban home, but the story did not include the android family members (wife, son, daughter) that Vision created for himself in that comic, so there are still things to draw from there.

But since the series is still untitled, maybe Vision will be more of a supporting character than a titular protagonist. Perhaps he'll be mentoring the next-generation team of Young Avengers that we know is coming, as he did in the original Young Avengers comics by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung.
