Choir! Choir! Choir! is all about bringing people together through the power of music, and no artist better represents that ideal than Patti Smith. Back in April, the nontraditional choir group led by Canadian artists Nobu Adilman and Daveed Goldman teamed with the art punk goddess to double down on the profound energy of connection. Today, video of their unique performance of the iconic “People Have the Power” has come online.
The performance took place at New York City’s Public Theater as part of Onassis Festival 2019. More than 200 New Yorkers joined Smith and C!C!C! to sing backing vocals, while The Police’s Stewart Copeland was also on hand to bang a small metal egg pan. “People Have the Power” tends to be a sing-along song whenever Smith (or, honestly, anyone) performs it, but there is certainly something even more impactful when everyone has been instructed on the actual harmonies.
Choir! Choir! Choir! have shared video of the collaboration ahead of their special concert along the US/Mexico border. Taking place October 13th at California’s Boarder Field State Park, the performance will find some 300 people on the Tijuana side and 500 on the San Diego side singing “With a Little Help from My Friends” together. Presented by University of California San Diego’s ArtPower, the border show is part of C!C!C!’s fall tour, tickets for which can be found here.
