Patti Smith Pens Touching Tribute to Sam Shepard

“We were friends; good or bad, we were just ourselves. The passing of time did nothing but strengthen that.”

By Sam Sodomsky.

Patti Smith has shared a touching tribute at The New Yorker for her friend, collaborator, and former romantic partner Sam Shepard. The playwright, actor, and poet died late last week due to complications from ALS. In her essay, titled “My Buddy,” Smith weaves together dreamlike recollections of their various travels together and their final encounters. She also describes the nature of their relationship: “We were friends; good or bad, we were just ourselves,” she writes. “The passing of time did nothing but strengthen that.” Read the whole piece here.
