Patrick Warburton's family has made it known that they are not fans of his work on Family Guy.

"They hate the show even more today than they did twenty-five years ago," the actor, who has voiced Joe Swanson on the hit sitcom for over two decades, explained during the PaleyFest LA: Family Guy 25th Anniversary Celebration on Friday, April 19.

"My father was in a monastery for three months. He almost became a monk," Warburton continued, noting that his father's "spiritual advisor" was Thomas Merton, who he identified as "a very famous Catholic scholar" before joking that fans would know who he was "if you weren't heathens and watched Family Guy."

But in all seriousness, Warburton recalled, "My mother [went] around the neighborhood when I was 13 years old, passing out pamphlets on the sins of masturbation," something he notes "did not get me into the cool crowd."

Warburton summarized his family's feelings by saying, "So they hate the show."

The actor even claimed that his mother's disdain for Family Guy went as far as her attempting to get the show canceled.

"My mother belonged to the American Television Council and they were trying to get the show canceled," Warburton shared, before simultaneously revealing, "I was helping support my parents with Family Guy money."

Despite the financial windfall she reaped from her son's success, Warburton's mother remained true to her convictions.

"She tried to get me to sign the petition [to cancel the show]," he explained. "I said, 'Mom, if you don't think I'm going to talk about this publicly, this is the greatest irony. You're laundering money, you're laundering it to yourself.' They hate it more today."

Before the full-cast panel commenced, Warburton told PEOPLE on the red carpet: "Family Guy is a show that's been running for 25 years. It's a cartoon. It's satire. As long as it remains relevant and current and creative, it [will] continue to go and to move."

The star then admitted that the satire presented in Family Guy "could be incredibly polarizing," but noted that "a lot of people actually who really don't get satire and just find themselves offended with everything."

Calling satire "one of the oldest forms of humor," Warburton maintained that "cartoon satire can say things that nobody else can, whether it be in live action or on a stage or whatnot."

Despite his family's less-than-positive take on Family Guy, the star said he's "really thankful to be a little part of it." Seth MacFarlane, Alex Borstein, Mila Kunis, Seth Green and Arif Zahir also star in the series, which was created by the Ted actor and is currently airing episodes from its 22nd season.

"Such a great writing crew. Seth's a genius. I'm just thankful that Seth hired me 25 years ago because we've seen what Seth does with his voice. We've seen American Dad. I'm glad he's not doing Joe. How about that?" Warburton joked.

Family Guy airs Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. ET on Fox and can be streamed on Hulu the next day.
