Patrick Warburton Dresses Up in Face Paint as His Seinfeld Character David Puddy for NHL Game

Patrick Warburton reprised his Seinfeld role at a New Jersey Devils hockey game

The ’90s are back!

Patrick Warburton, who played New Jersey Devils superfan David Puddy on beloved series Seinfeld, reprised his role during a Devils’ game at the Prudential Center in Newark on Tuesday night.

Warburton’s character on the sitcom was the sometimes boyfriend of Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ character Elaine. In one memorable season six episode, called “The Face Painter,” Puddy paints his face with the Devils’ colors for a Stanley Cup playoff game.

Elaine, disgusted to learn that Puddy is a “face painter,” asks him to stop or she’ll break up with him. Puddy tells Elaine he will, but then attends a game with his chest painted with the letter “D” instead of his face.

A New Jersey native himself, Warburton, 54, arrived at the game decked out in the same face paint that his character wore on the show in the 1990s. The Devils’ social media accounts showed Warburton recreating iconic scenes from “The Face Painter,” fist-bumping the players and hanging out in the locker room. Warburton also dropped the ceremonial first puck of the game.

In one video, Warburton takes off his Devils jersey to reveal a giant “D” painted on his chest, skates around the ice greeting players — and then promptly face-plants. After his fall, Warburton took a bow.

According to NorthJersey.com, Warburton requested that his appearance fee instead be used for a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Devils agreed, donating $25,000 to the charity.

Warburton posted on Instagram after the game, writing, “Good time tonight. This team is young and exciting to watch. Future looks bright! Go Devils!!!!”

Puddy may not be a good luck charm for the team — the Devils ended up losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 during Tuesday night’s game.
